Manchester City Council is proposing to undertake a full refurbishment at Manchester Aquatics Centre to bring the facility up to modern day standards for the benefit of all users.

The refurbishment scheme has been designed to maintain and grow the centre's aquatics and health and fitness programmes for the next 20 years. This will include upgrade works to all areas of the centre including:

  • All swimming pools
  • Fitness suites including all gyms and studios
  • Leisure Water
  • Cafe
  • Health Suite
  • Changing Place - accessible changing provision to meet the needs of disabled people

The refurbishment will introduce new digital and sustainable technologies helping to make us more energy efficient and to provide a more modern and efficient building in the long term.

The works would be split into phases to enable a reduced programme of public swimming to continue at all times. We will however need to close the gym, studio, health suite, main pool, diving pool and cafe during phase 1 of the project, the training pool will remain open and access to nearby centres provided throughout this period which we anticipate will be from December 2021 to late Spring 2023.
