Eastern members over the past few months have truly shown compassion, commitment and community spirit. Here are just some of the events that have been going on in and around the Eastern community being led by our members:

6th March 2022:

BETTER member Daniela, BETTER General Manager Nikki and a group of other BETTER members, family and friends came together to raise money for BEAT eating disorder charity by climbing the 4-mile, 886m ascent up South Wales’ highest peak, Pen y Fan. Daniela achieved a final fundraising total of £2207.50.

27th March 2022:

BETTER Eastern member Jon took to the tarmac and pushed himself mentally and physically to run in the Cardiff University/Cardiff Half Marathon helping to raise money for local charities. Jon gave his all achieving an outstanding time of 1 hour, 35 minutes and 6 seconds.

May 2022:

Along with family and friends, BETTER member Sian helped form Roo’s Crew, an enthusiastic group of fundraisers who took on the challenge of keeping moving in May. Each member of the Crew covered 100km either running, walking, cycling, taking fitness classes, or swimming.

Sian’s 3 year old nephew Rupert (known as Roo) recently spent 6 months in Noah’s Ark children's hospital and has been diagnosed with not 1 but 2 rare medical conditions. They are both life-limiting and at times life-threatening.

The aim of Roo's crew is to raise money which will be shared between Noah's Ark - for families needing specialist medical care across Wales, PORT (pseudo obstruction research trust), and to purchase medical equipment for Roo so he can lead a normal life, as much as possible.

7th May 2022:

The CARTEN100 took place which is a tough challenge, Cardiff to Tenby “100 miles, on a bike, in a day”. Not a race, not a sportive, just a ride to Tenby!

Three friends and BETTER Eastern members – Mark, Nick and Dave took on the challenge on a warm day in May from Cardiff to Tenby, participating with thousands of other riders in the event which lasts roughly over a ten-hour period. While the main aim is to get people on their bikes, a huge benefit of the day is the money the riders raise for charity. Mark and Dave finished in 8 hours 24 and Nick in an impressive 6 hours 50 minutes. All three attend Group Cycle classes and Body Conditioning to help keep their fitness levels up.

June 2022:

And most recently BETTER Eastern member Patrick achieved a huge victory confronting and conquering Ben Nevis - the highest mountain in Scotland, the United Kingdom and the British Isles. The summit is 1,345 metres above sea level and is the highest land in any direction for 459 miles. Patrick recently had to come to terms with living life with epilepsy and wanted to prove to himself that he could still lead a normal life and challenge himself. Patrick says that he wouldn’t have been victorious if it wasn’t for attending regular Group cycle classes and group fitness class at Eastern to help raise fitness levels in preparation. Congratulations Patrick!

Some fantastic work with more to come soon, well done Eastern members! Thank you for all you do and keep up the good work!
