Belfast City Hall was the setting for this year's Belfast GLL Sport Foundation Awards earlier this week with 125 local sports stars receiving £70K worth of sports bursaries, the largest number of funded athletes of any region in the UK.

We wanted to makethis a night to remember after a long hiatus due to the pandemic.

Over 130 guests assembled in the Great Hall including local councillors, media, athletes and their families, national governing bodies, social enterprises, business affiliates and GLL colleagues.

The event was hosted by Breakfast radio host  Pete Snodden who added real excitement to the event. The well know local celebrity hosted a Q&A session with some of our VIP sporting ambassadors including the legendary Lady Mary Peters, Olympic Gold medalist, boxer Aidan Walsh, Olympic bronze medalist, Eve Walsh Dan, Team GB Paralympic athlete and Irish hockey international Shirley McCay, GSF ambassador. The panel enthralled the guests with their stories about motivation and how much support they have received from the Foundation.

Peter Bundey. chair of GSF, gave an insightful talk on the objectives of the Foundation and how it has made a difference to young athletes who may have been considering giving up.  The scale and potential in Belfast was summed up by Gareth Kirk who showcased the quality of training facilities on offer to these young sports stars.

Over 40 athletes were awarded on the night, representing a diverse range of sports including rowing, swimming, ice hockey, shooting, tennis and waterpolo.

One of our favourite nights of the year is back.  In style!

We wish all our funded athletes good luck with their training and competitions and look forward to sharing their success with everyone.
